Zehr Chiropractic – Helping Patients Cope with Migraines

Migraine, Migraines, Headache, Headaches, Head Pain, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Relief, Headache Relief, Tension Headache, Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Headaches ReliefWhen one thinks about having a migraine, he usually imagines head pain that is severe and goes away with rest and medication. It is interesting to note, however, that migraines actually happen in phases. They may really begin 24 hours before the head pain hits and last after it goes away for a few days. And there is a better way to cope with them than taking medication.

What Are the Phases of a Migraine?

The prodrome phase begins 3 to 24 hours before the head pain starts and is experienced by 3 out of 5 migraine sufferers. This phase includes:

  • Mood swings – irritability, euphoria, and/or depression
  • Cravings for certain foods
  • Thirst
  • Extreme exhaustion
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Bowel problems
  • Stiff muscles

The aura phase starts just before the head pain hits. Auras come on slowly and last less than an hour. Approximately 1 out of every 4 migraine patients experiences aura. In this phase, one may experience:

  • Visual disturbances such as…
    • Hallucinations
    • Blurry vision
    • Zigzag lines
    • Partial blindness
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Problems with speech
  • Issues with motor control
  • Dizziness

The pain phase is the one that most think of in reference to a migraine. The head pain may last for a few hours or a few days. The pain may start out slowly and increase in intensity, ranging from moderate to severe, and one may also have neck pain. Physical exertion often increases the pain.

The postdrome phase is the final phase and can make one feel ill for a while after the head pain subsides. Symptoms include:

  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Extreme exhaustion
  • Mood swings
  • Weakness
  • Problems remembering and focusing

Coping with Migraines in Norton Shores, Michigan

Migraines often occur due to a misalignment in the upper bones of the neck, particularly the C1 and C2 vertebrae. Here at Zehr Chiropractic, we use a gentle method to help these bones move back into place. This is often all that is required to see a decrease in migraines or a complete resolution of them.
